Recently, I have been highly aware of how fast time is flying by me. Especially with my kids. I was really feeling it at the end of this past school year. With one going into high school, I have a strong sense of the lack of time before she leaves the nest. I have so much I want to sow into her. Into all of them. And so little time to do it. This has been the first summer in many where I have not worked outside the home to some degree. We also don't commit to anything in the summer months so it has been a time for our family to breathe and slow down and have margin. I have had a lot of quality time with the kids and it has been a gift. Even when they are making me crazy. It is so easy to get caught up in the stress and speed of the whirlwind of life and just let it pass you by. But, because I feel the pressure of these last 4 years to pour into her, I have made more effort to slow down and enjoy. I encourage you to do it from time to time. Just. Go. Slow. Stop. And smell the roses. Talk to them. Snuggle on the couch and watch movies with them. Even when your to do list is ridiculous. Go to the pool and watch them giggle. They won't remember what you look like in a swimsuit, but they will remember the time you spent with them. Let them build forts and run a muck of your house. They won't remember that the house wasn't clean. Take joy rides and sing at the top of your lungs in the car. They won't remember that you were out of tune. They will remember that you worshipped the Lord no matter how silly it sounded. Read the Word and pray TOGETHER. Pray fo rtheir friends. Invest in their friends. They need to SEE us say what is important. With all the pressures of life and society and the warp speed we live in, our kids need to see us slow down and take in the joy that is life. They need to see us spending time with the Lord. They need to see us pour our lives into them, into people and relationships and being present. And cherishing every moment of it. These tiny seeds will make them so much stronger some day.
And this isn't just true with our kids. It applies to everyone. It's sitting up late talking to your hubby and remembering that you are both adults that still really like each other. It's playing outside and getting messy with extended family. It's taking walks with your neighbor and growing friendship. It's taking the time to listen and be friendly to the chatty cashier in the checkout line, even when you are running late. It's sitting with someone in their struggles and just making sure they know you are here and they are loved. It's stopping to pray for the people you love, because God really does listen. It's saying YOU MATTER without ever speaking a word. You see, we make each other stronger. We were meant for it. It's these tiny seeds we plant that make all the difference. It's through them that people see Jesus.
"So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified." Isaiah 61:3
I hope this printable will remind you, or someone you know, of this very thing and can be a source of encouragement. That is my hope and prayer for every thing I design here at The Spirit Orchard.
